BJP Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui has filed a police complaint in Delhi against Islamic religious leader Maulana Sajjad Nomani, who issued a controversial fatwa ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
A video featuring Maulana Sajjad Nomani urging the Muslim community in Maharashtra to vote for the Congress-Sena-NCP alliance had gone viral.
Nomani said he believed that a BJP loss in Maharashtra could destabilise the central government. Reacting to the video, the Maharashtra government claimed that the Congress and its allies were trying to divide society out of fear of defeat.
The complaint also alleged that Nomani, through a fatwa, called for boycotting Muslim workers associated with the BJP and rejecting them from Islam. A video of the controversial fatwa has also been released.
Maulana Nomani gave a statement before the Maharashtra assembly elections in which he had said that social and religious relations with Muslims working with the BJP should be severed. He had also said that such people have discarded Islam and their “hookah-paani should be stopped”.
The religious leader’s statement stirred a political row with parties having divided opinions about the same. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter, Siddiqui wrote to Delhi Police demanding strict action against Maulana Nomani.
The complainant also maintained that due to this statement, there is a danger of division in society and the spread of religious disharmony, and appealed to the police to take immediate necessary steps.
Talking to India Today TV, Jamal Siddiqui said that after this statement of Maulana, Muslim workers associated with BJP are being socially boycotted.
“They (Muslims) are facing contempt and threats at mosques and other religious places. Influenced by this statement of Maulana, many people are abusing and making indecent comments on social media,” Siddiqui said, claiming that he and other workers are also receiving death threats.
In his complaint, Siddiqui alleged that people of Muslim society are calling the officials of BJP Minority Front by the name Ghanshyam. Due to which, a situation of enmity is brewing. “Because in his fatwa, the Maulana has asked to call the Muslims working in the BJP by the name Ghanshyam. Due to such a fatwa, there is a danger of division in society and the spreading of religious disharmony, including the life and property of Muslims working in the BJP,” he said.
